Arhuaca handbags or tutu are a symbol of cultural identity, a garment, and a work tool.  They are made from sheep’s wool using various stitches, giving each product a distinct appearance and degree of elasticity.  These bags are made exclusively by women,  a feminine activity that represents fertility, femininity, and the maternal womb.  Each design contains content or a reason for being, and preserves the essence of its origin.  In Colombia, these bags are worn by both men and women. These beautiful bags are heavy-duty, and the yarn is tightly woven with a single needle. They are neither knitted nor crocheted and are woven so tightly, they are capable of standing by themselves.

This bag, excluding the strap, is 5 inches in diameter and 8 inches tall.   The Strap, measured separately, is 16 inches from the top of the bag to the top of the strap and 2.25 inches wide.   They can be worn across the body or from one side. Please see the schematic detailing the way these handbags were measured.

Handmade by the Association of Sierra Nevada Families in Valledupar, Colombia.
